A watercolorist of floral still life paintings, he often worked in oils. Mr. Banning was one of the founders of the Blackstone Valley Art Association (Massachusetts) in 1957. Accompanying other artists from the Association, he traveled to the coast and the harbor towns of the North Atlantic to construct his seascapes and harbor view paintings of Rockport and other fishing villages.
He was born in the Netherlands, son of Hermanus and Sietske (VanderSluis) Banning, and came to the United States at age 10. He later lived in Northbridge and Uxbridge, and many years in Whitinsville, where he was an artist and florist. Banning was married with children and died at the age of 88 in October 1991.
