A native of Glasgow, Scotland, he was born in 1938 and attended the Glasgow School of Art and Design. His work was exhibited at the Institute's annual exhibition while he was still a student, along with works by some of the best-known and respected the artists of the fifties and early sixties there.
Johnson had his first solo show in 1964 at the tea rooms of the Citizens Theatre in the Gorbals District of Glasgow. The critical and financial success of the show encouraged the artist to pursue his art for the rest of his life.
His work has been exhibited in the United Kingdom and abroad and he resides in Paphos, Cyprus.
