Herbert W. Holden, Jr. is in his mid 80's lives and paints on Cape Cod, having been born in Winchester, Massachusetts on November 2, 1922. He was trained at the New England School of Art and then served with the Coast Guard in World War II. He worked as a commercial artist in Boston for 41 years, the last 8 at his Design Center, Inc in Boston. He retired from graphic design and commercial art in 1986, and moved to Cape Cod and started his fine art career in earnest.
He works in oil and watercolor in a realist style but with a unique sense of style and light. His subject matter is mainly boating scenes, seascapes and landscapes of Cape Cod and the Islands. He teaches art classes in Cotuit.
