President of the Grand Island Sketch Club and designer of the insignia of the Grand Island Independent newspaper, Pearl Love Miller was born and raised in Oberlin, Kansas, and was the oldest of five children of Jennie Francis (nee Hayward) Love and John Edgar Love. After teaching school for several years in Kansas, Pearl married Eugene Paul Miller, and by 1920, they were in Nebraska, living in Lincoln, where, according to census records, he was “manager of a retail department store.” By 1930 they were settled in Grand Island for the remainder of their lives. They had a daughter, Maurine Miller Hoenninger, and the family's long-time residence was at 819
