Biography Michel Claude Clodion
Clodion's work represented the quintessence of what developed in to the high Rococo style, with his strong emphasis on playfulness in both subject matter and composition. He won the grand prize for sculpture at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1759 at the age of just 21, after which his fame spread swiftly. Clodion worked in Rome from 1762, but returned to Paris nine years later, declining an invitation from Catherine II who was eager for him to go to St. Petersburg. Back in Paris, Clodion's success and fame only grew, with frequent plaudits for his works exhibited at the Salon.
