Born in Illinois of German parents. By 1887 Hoffman had settled in San Francisco where he painted houses to support his growing family. In his leisure he made painting forays into northern California and became a competent landscape painter. His pastoral landscapes often include cows grazing along a river at sunset. He died in San Francisco on Sept. 20, 1939.
