Born in Seattle, Washington on January 26, 1909. Mathis was an art major at Washington State University where he studied with William T. McDermitt. Upon graduation in 1931, he moved to the San Francisco Bay area where he worked as a commercial artist. With his wife Jean, he relocated to the Gold Rush country in 1948, settling into a Victorian house in Nevada City. His drawings and sketches of the area earned him the title, "Pictorial historian of the Mother Lode." He died in Santa Clara, CA on Sept. 28, 1977.
