Born in Holland on Feb. 22, 1852. Rubens (né Simon Levie Rubens) studied art in Munich. After arriving in the U.S. about 1882, he taught drawing and painting in New York City and Washington, DC for many years. He was a resident of Los Angeles in 1914 and then settled in San Francisco. Abandoning art, he worked in San Francisco as an elevator operator. His works are rare.
