A California regionalist painter in oil and watercolor, Ruth Buffington was Nebraska born and lived at home with her parents in Omaha until 1930, when at age 24 she moved to the Monterey Peninsula. She never married, but resided in Carmel Highlands with Marjorie Ribbel, her long-time artist companion from Nebraska.

In San Francisco and Monterey, among Ruth’s teachers were George Booth Post, Ralph Du Casse, Eliot O’Hara, Jean Varda, Alexander Nepote, and Rex Brandt. Ruth exhibited with the American Federation of Arts, Monterey County Fairs, Gambles Galleries, and Carmel Art Association, which she supported as a long-time member.
