A trained artist and "claiming no talent for portraits", Elizabeth Francis Amherst Hale was a watercolor painter of landscapes and sketch artist, who was born into English aristocracy but spent much of her adult life away from upper-class surroundings on the frontier in Quebec, Canada. She was the sister of William Pitt Amherst, Earl of Amherst, later referred to as William Amherst, a British diplomat, colonial administrator and Governor General of India between 1823 and 1828. With Hale, Elizabeth had eight sons and four daughters.
She became the wife of John Hale in 1798, and in 1819 the couple acquired a 130,000 acre seigneur (plot of land) at Sainte-Anne in Quebec, Canada on the Sainte-Anne River near its convergence
