Addie L. Hughes was born in New York of Irish parents in 1861. Hughes made the overland trek to California by train in 1870. After settling in Sacramento, she was active in the local art scene from the 1880s and later taught in the public schools. A spinster, she died in Sacramento on Nov. 13, 1925.
