Elizabeth Jane Hurst was born in Illinois on Nov. 21, 1900. Hurst appears to have moved to California in the 1930s. She worked as a telephone operator for the Los Angeles Times and was a long-time resident of Monterey. A spinster, she died there on May 31, 1985. As well as a painter of still lifes, she was also a composer of music.
