Francis J. Haxby (1905 - 1976)
Born in Dundee, Scotland, Francis Haxby came to Canada when he was boy. He received his artistic training at the Central Technical School and the Ontario College of Art, both located in Toronto. He worked primarily as a commercial artist until 1926. In that year, he painted a copy of a painting of Sir Adam Beck, the founder of the Ontario Hydro. A photograph of this painting was published in the Toronto Paper, The Star Weekly, and launched his career. In fact, there was a court case involving this work which revolved around the contention that Haxby had merely painted over a photograph.
