Thomas A. Smith was born in England in 1830. Smith exhibited 46 oil paintings in San Francisco in 1854 at D. L. Gunn's art store. They were done from sketches made by Thomas A. Ayres in 1849 and comprised a panorama of scenes extending from the Golden Gate to the summit of the Sierra Nevada. His panorama of Yosemite had a long run at McNulty's Hall in Sacramento in 1856. By 1860 he was a merchant in Marysville, CA.
