An illustrator for major magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, he also designed Broadway theater posters and painted landscape and genre scenes in Vermont and Maine.
John A. Fernie was born in Dundee, Scotland on December 17, 1919. He studied art at Manchester University, England, including a short period at Glasgow University which was interrupted by World War 2, where he served 5 1/2 years as a pilot in the Royal Air Force.
From 1946 on, he provided illustrations for magazines and commercial accounts in Toronto, Canada, and continued on in New York City in 1948. Fernie and his wife moved to Westport, Connecticut in 1950, while he maintained a New York
