Born in western Nebraska to Alva Todd and Lillie (nee Ceder) Todd, Mavis Brown became an artist and art teacher in California, far from her birthplace in frontier Nebraska. According to the birth certificate of her sister, who was two years older than Mavis, the family lived in a sod house in Farnam, now part of Lexington. But apparently they moved as Mavis is listed as being born in Keystone, which is in Keith County near Ogallala. Part of their farming operation was raising sheep, a contentious frontier issue in those days because sheep raisers needed fencing and cattle ranchers required open land.
