Maurice Joseph Selig was born in Chicago, IL on June 26, 1877. While living in San Francisco in the 1890s, Selig studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. He appears to have abandoned an art career and worked for the Los Angeles Harbor Dept until his demise on Feb. 2, 1944.
