Phoebe L. Woodburg McKay was born in Iowa on June 11, 1838. Phoebe was the wife of A. B. McKay. In 1854 she came to California and soon settled in Fresno. During the 1880s she taught painting and drawing to small classes of women. In 1907 she moved to Oakland where she remained until her death on Dec. 2, 1922.
