May Slessinger was born in San Francisco, California on May 4, 1872. Slessinger was a lifelong resident of her native city. By the turn of the century she was active in the local art scene.
In 1910 she painted a miniature of William Keith who stated "She does the best work in miniature I have seen in San Francisco." In 1918 she had a spacious studio in the Fairmont Hotel. A miniature of Queen Marie of Romania resulted in the artist being named Court Miniaturist. In 1922 she married David Bachman, president of Northern Oil Company, and remained in San Francisco until her demise on Oct. 25, 1954.
