Alexander Wells Chase was born in Zanesville, Ohio on September 24, 1843. Chase made the overland trek from Iowa to California in 1861. Along the way he made sketches and watercolors of the landscape, wildlife and Native Americans. During 1866-69 he was a member of the U.S. Coast Survey. In 1868 he was living with Cleveland Rockwell in a boarding house in San Francisco; the two artists were close friends and often painted together. Chase died near Tombstone, Arizona in 1888.
