Janice Capps Patterson (1938-2003)
Her family moved from Winston-Salem, NC to a small town in GA when she was 4 and lived in a hotel on Courthouse Square. She found a piano in the basement and began to bang out chords every day. She was never able to write the music she composed but with help from Dr. Tony Vaglio from Meredith College, her compositions were written down. Although music was always in her heart, she painted for the love of nature.
She painted nature, wilderness and landscapes. Her paintings were "realist" paintings, but sometimes her work was referred to as "Pre-Raphaelite" in support letters from colleagues for grants. She mostly used acrylic, but also enjoyed pointillism, pastels
