Biography Obiora Udechukwu
The painter and poet, Obiora Udechukwu, is widely regarded as
one of the most influential artists in contemporary Nigerian art. In 1965 he enrolled at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, but following the crises resulting from pogroms in Northern Nigeria, he transferred to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, graduating in
1972 with a thesis on Igbo Uli mural painting.
Central to Udechukwu’s
work is his interest in the relationship between poetry and drawing; in fact his research into Igbo Uli provided him the theoretical basis as well as technical facility and formal language with which to turn the act of ink drawing into lyrical journey. The painting, What the Weaver Wove (1992) is a pivotal piece.
