Biography   Hattie Carl

Among the first of four Hopi potters to use an identification mark rather than signature, Hattie Carl may have done this because of unfamiliarity with English writing or wish to remain anonymous.  One of her marks was the cloud flower.

According to Michael Stanislawski, scholar of Hopi pottery, "The motivation to mark pottery with a symbol or signature seems to stem from commerce with non-Indians. The use of an identification mark rather than a signature may have been due to unfamiliarity with English writing, or a wish to remain anonymous and seemingly less competitive."
