Viola Elsa Best Webster was born in Albany, OR on April 7, 1883. The Best family settled in San Leandro, CA when Viola was three. Her father, Daniel Best, was a pioneer tractor manufacturer who merged with another to become the Caterpillar Company. After attending Miss Horton's School in Berkeley, Viola studied at the Partington Art School in San Francisco. She then worked as an illustrator for a local newspaper until her widowed father became ill and she had to give up her work to care for him. Shortly thereafter, she married Frank Webster and family cares precluded her from further art. Mrs. Webster died in San Leandro on Dec. 19, 1980. Exh: San Francisco Art Association, 1903.
