Biography Andrew DeVries
Born and raised on a farm near Rochester, New York, Andrew DeVries left school at the age of 15 and remained on the farm for five years, painting in the time left to him after the farm work was done. At the age of 20, he moved to Denver, CO where he spent two years drawing and painting the dancers of Ballet Denver.
Reike Maria Love, the artistic director of the ballet, suggested that he try sculpture, and according to the artist ". . .as soon as I felt the clay in my hands, I knew that I'd found my calling." He was apprenticed to sculptor Ed Dwight and learned about metalwork in the foundry of artist Lee Schenkeir.
