Formed at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Charles Barberis obtained in 1922 the travel scholarship founded for artists by the General Government of Madagascar. He remained four years on the island and this stay deeply marked his work. He made several of his most important sculptures, among them the Bust of the young Ramatou.
On his return to France in 1927, he participated in the work of the Colonial Exposition. He thus seconded Albert Janniot in the execution of the great monumental relief which adorns the facade of the Museum of the Colonies.
However, he continued to exhibit his Malagasy works at the Bernheim Jeune Gallery in 1927 and also took part in the 2nd International Colonial Art Exhibition in Naples in 1934.
