Hazel W. Strapp Rakestraw was born in Minnesota on September 14, 1895. Hazel was the second wife of Norris Rakestraw, a professor of chemistry.
She was in Providence, Rhode Island in 1940 and later moved to southern California. She painted in and around La Jolla for many years before her death in Los Angeles on August 31, 1977.
Her rare paintings include scenes of the desert and the coast at La Jolla.
