Jack Rivera Bates was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on Dec 17, 1907 of American parents. Bates spent his early childhood in Mexico and Texas. He obtained an engineering degree from Columbia University and studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago, Art Students League of NYC, and Art Center at San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
He later settled in Los Angeles and taught at the Studio Art League. He was also design engineer for Kaiser in San Francisco and an inventor with several patents. His oils and watercolors were inspired by his world travels.
Bates died in Los Angeles on Aug. 3, 1990.
