Little is known about Maxwell Swartz other than he was a private in the US Army from 1942 to 1950 or there about. He eventually became a physician in Massachusetts and died there in 2001.
During his tenure in the Army he chronicled the Second World War and a soldier's life in post-war occupied countries, most notably France, Algeria and Italy.
Although he appears to have had little formal art training, his body of work in printmaking, mostly etching and lithography left a remarkable record of strong artistic content and imagination relating to life in the Army during the War and the countries he visited while serving.
