Biography Jerome Seckler
Jerome Seckler (1915-1987) was born in Manhattan and grew up in Brooklyn. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music, and then the Art Students League, where he was mentored by painters Jo Goodman and Joe Solman. He was active in progressive politics and union organizing.
In 1939 he married Dorothy Gees, a young artist and art historian who became a well-known critic working at MoMA from 1945-50, and who served as Associate Editor of Art News from 1950-55 and Contributing Editor to Art in America.
Seckler went to war in 1942 and saw combat in France and Germany. Fluent in French, he was stationed in Paris shortly after liberation, and interviewed Picasso, Matisse, Roualt and other French artists who identified
