Leonard Sutton Wood was born in England on Nov. 17, 1882. Wood earned a degree in architecture in his native land and, shortly after WWI, came to California. He lived in Atascadero for a few years before settling in Sausalito. As well as an architect, he was also a photoengraver at the San Francisco Chronicle for 22 years until retiring in 1941. As an artist, he etched and illustrated in pen-and-ink. He died in Sausalito on Dec. 5, 1970.
