Biography Thomas McAvoy
Thomas McAvoy (1905-1966) is known to photography buffs as one of the first four staff photographers hired for the first issue of Life Magazine in 1936, along with Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White and Peter Stackpole.
He began working for LIFE after he shot a candid photo session in the White House with FDR in 1935 and worked for LIFE until 1960. It was said of him that he was a "pioneer photographer to use candid photography for news stories."
