James H. Wise was born in Virginia in 1811. Wise worked in New Orleans in 1843 and Charleston, SC in 1844-45. He brought his family across the plains to California in 1854. For two years he had a studio in Sacramento and then moved to Oakland and established a studio in San Francisco. In 1871 he moved to NYC and shared a studio with Norton Bush. The following year he went to St Joseph, MO and died there months later.
