Born in Dakar in 1970 Mamady Seydi lives in Mbour in Senegal and graduated from the National School of Art in Dakar in 1997. He is one of the most exciting artists to emerge from West Africa in recent years.
Working with iron and a variety of materials including sackcloth and wood, Seydi creates mythological half animal, half human figures in installations inspired by Wolof folk tales and through his exposure to Léopold Sédar Senghor and Abdoulaye Sadji's collection of folk tales "Leuk le Lièvre" written in 1953 to both teach French and reconnect Senegalese students with their oral folk history.
