The craft of painting china was a popular pastime for "cultured" young women during the last half of the 19th century and into the next. Publications and magazines targeted to women often included patterns for embellishing porcelain blanks. Hundreds of thousands of plates, cups, bowls, vases, and other utilitarian objects were decorated with an enameling technique and subsequently fired for permanency. Of these, many were poorly executed by amateur hands, but some individuals, like Edith Dollarhide (1886-1971), developed exceptional prowess and created stellar examples of this home craft.
