Juan Jose Sicre was born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1898 and was graduated from the Academy of San Alejandro in Havana. He was awarded a scholarship for study in Europe in 1919. He studied in Madrid at the Fine Arts School of San Fernando and in Paris under Antoine Bourdelle. He shared a studio in Florence, Italy and in Paris, France, with the Cuban painter Antonio Gattorno. He returned to Cuba in 1927.
Sicre, Gattorno and the painter Victor Manuel did a series of solo exhibits in the spring of 1927 that introduced European style Modern Art to Havana, and began Cubas Modern Art Movement. He was one of the founding members of El Grupo Minorista, signing the groups charter
