Biography Peter Duggan
Born in Ireland, Peter Duggan was brought to the United States as an infant in 1810. Little is known about his youth nor does it appear that anyone has found his birth date. He became well respected in New York City between 1844 and 1856 for his crayon and charcoal portraits. It is thought these were his years of late 30s and early 40s.
In 1842, he is listed for the first time as a student at the National Academy of Design*, having enrolled in the Antique Class. He continued through 1849, also registering for the life class. His first enrollment listed him as a "student of painting", but by 1847, his records described him as a "painter and sculptor".
