One of five children of Omaha Indian tribal chief Joseph La Flesche and Omaha mixed-race woman, Mary Gale, Susette La Flesche Tibbles, also known as Josette, was a teacher, painter, illustrator, interpreter and social activist for Nebraska Indians. Of her it was written: “The only artist of any consequence during the early years of statehood was Yosette La Flesche Tibbles, an Omaha Indian born at Bellevue in 1854. Mrs. Tibbles produced many paintings and also illustrated in color a book printed in 1898: Oo-Mah-Ha Ta Wa Tha: Omaha City by Fannie Reed Giffen.
