One of five children of Omaha Indian tribal chief Joseph La Flesche and Omaha mixed-race woman, Mary Gale, Susette La Flesche Tibbles, also known as Josette, was a teacher, painter, illustrator, interpreter and social activist for Nebraska Indians. Of her it was written: “The only artist of any consequence during the early years of statehood was Yosette La Flesche Tibbles, an Omaha Indian born at Bellevue in 1854.
