Born in Skelsior, Denmark in 1844. Marius studied under various masters at the Royal Academy in Denmark before immigrating to the U.S. in 1872. After living briefly in Salt Lake City, he moved to California and lived in San Jose for a few years. In 1878 he joined his brother and his new bride at their home in Oakland. Marius commuted daily to a studio in San Francisco where he became an active member of the local art association, and participated in local and state exhibitions.
