Biography Furio Piccirilli
Born in Massa, a commune in the Carrara province of Italy, Furio Piccirilli became a sculptor of public monuments and figural works with allegorical themes. Many of his pieces were carved marble. He emigrated to New York City with his family, and worked from a studio
on 142nd Street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.
Furio Piccirilli was one of six sons of Giuseppe Piccirilli. He studied sculpture at the Academia San Luca in Rome, and then emigrated to New York City with his parents and
brothers in 1888. The father, with his six sons, established a
marble-cutting studio that specialized in stone modeling and carving for the leading
sculptors of their day.
