Born in England. Prendergast sailed from Honolulu and arrived in San Francisco in July of 1848. During his four years in California, he did a number of drawings and watercolors. Several lithographs were made from his works, the best known is Procession at San Francisco in Celebration of the Admission of California, 1850. Theodore Johnson's California and Oregon 1850 included illustrations of four of his paintings. A few of his drawings are extant and, although primitive in execution, are of great historical importance. He was living in London in 1911.
