Charles Lopez 1869-1906

Mexican-born sculptor Charles Albert Lopez, who later became an American citizen, studied in Paris with John Quincy Adams Ward. Lopez designed well-received public statues in New York City buildings and exhibited at several American industrial expositions.

At the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition he won a gold medal for his sculpture of a woman and two men outside the "Negro Building" which caused much controversy.

Lopez also designed a monument for the Cuba Libre movement.

His sculpture The Sprinter is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
