Biography Cecil de Blaquiere Howard
Born in Clifton, Canada near Niagara Falls, Cecil Howard moved to Buffalo, New York at age two. At age 13, he started clay modeling at the Art Students League with James E. Fraser. Then he went to Paris for thirty-five years where he studied at the Academie Julian and his sculpture was shown at the Salon. He supported himself with fashion drawing and by teaching the Argentine tango.
During World War II, Howard drove a Red Cross truck carrying food and medicine to German prison camps. In 1943, he was recruited by the OSS to do secret work in Washington and London. In 1944, for a "chaste stone nude," he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
