Biography John Elliott
Artist, illustrator, and muralist, John Elliott was born in Lincolnshire, England and studied in Paris at the Academie Julian under Carolus-Duran. In 1878, he went to Rome to study and there met his future wife, Maud Howe, the daughter of Julia Ward Howe, the author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. An excellent record of his life is the book about him his wife wrote titled: John Elliott: the Story of an Artist.
When the couple married in 1887, they spent their first summer in Cornish, New Hampshire where they rented the home of Henry and Edith Prellwitz, and circulated in Cornish society. Their closest friends were Herbert Adams and his wife. In 1904, they bought 20 acres of land in Plainfield
