Anna Stanley was born shortly before the end of the Civil War, on April 20, 1864 in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Born into a high-ranking military family, she was the daughter of General David S. Stanley in the U.S. Army. By the time Anna was fourteen years of age she had already lived in South Dakota, Michigan, New York, Texas, and Washington, DC. In 1878, she moved with her family to Buffalo New York and attended the Buffalo Female Academy, where she first studied art under Ammi M. Farnham (1846-1922), who studied art at the Munich Academy with American portrait painter Frank Duveneck (1848-1919).
