I was only nine or ten years old when I first started going to Miss Yale’s studio. I had been drawing constantly, after school, making pencil copies of steel engravings which I found in the Art Journal, and I had always had the use of my father’s paints, brushes, and palette. So he decided I should have some instruction from a good painter, hence the decision to send me to Lilla Yale.
