Edward Frederick Brotze was born in San Antonio, TX on May 28, 1868 of German parents. Leaving San Antonio, Brotze came to California where he studied at St Mary's College in Moraga. He then worked for a Chicago newspaper at the turn of the century before moving to Los Angeles to work for the Times. Leaving Los Angeles in 1905, he moved to Seattle where he worked for theTimes from 1907 until his death on December 6, 1939.
