Elizabeth B. Duffey was active as a still-life painter and writer in Philadelphia and Woodbury, New Jersey in the 1860s. At the time that Duffy was painting, a tradition of still-life painting was firmly established in Philadelphia, its best known practitioners being members of the Peale family and John F. Francis. The subjects chosen by these artists included foods, primarily fruit and vegtables, cakes and wine.
In her role as author, Duffy wrote on topics relating to the home and garden as well as art reviews for Arthur‚s Illustrated Home Magazine. She was a strong advocate for the sharing of domestic chores by men and women and of the importance of women having interests outside the home.
