Ella Moss Duval


Ella Moss Duval was recognized as a portrait painter and fine art teacher. In addition, she was known for her genre paintings.

She was born in Pass Christian, Mississippi in 1843. Exhibiting a natural talent, she was taken by her mother to Dresden, Saxony in the late 1850's where she studied with August Wilhelm Sohn at the Royal Academy, Dusseldorf, Germany. Duval returned to the United States after the Civil War in 1877, and established herself as a portrait painter in New York City. In 1879 she married and moved to Austin, Texas where she painted and taught until 1883. She then moved to San Antonio.

While living in San Antonio, Duval worked primarily as a portrait painter and as a teacher. Her portrait subjects included Jud  ...  Displaying 750 of 1206 characters.
