Gary Dudley

Biography from the Archives of askART

Gary Dudley was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in June 1955. Because his father was in the Navy, the family moved around quite a bit before settling in San Diego, CA. Gary achieved local attention as a promising athlete. Although he attended San Jose State University as a student athlete, he left without a degree and worked in corporate administration for various companies. He later returned to school and graduated from San Diego State University in 1988 with a degree in Kinesiology.

Gary again worked in the corporate arena before founding his own small business in 1990. Since the business required that he spend a lot of time at the computer, he developed carpal tunnel syndrome. He had a novel idea for a computer entry device that would help solve the carpel tunnel problem as it was being used. He bought some clay to model the device. However, he never had the time to make the model and the clay went unused. In 2002, he found the clay again and began playing with it while pondering a business problem. Soon he realized that he was shaping a figure and began concentrating his efforts on giving form to the figure. The figure evolved into his first sculpted piece, "Exquisite".

Seeing that his work has promise, he continues to sculpt, developing and perfecting his own methods and techniques. He has a fascination with portraying figures involved in all forms of movement including overt physical action, subtle facial expression changes and the projection of a mood. In "Exquisite" for example, the figure appears to be captured in the act of drawing a breath. Although his subject matter is widely varied and undoubtedly reminiscent of his life experiences, the common theme in his work is the capture of the subject in an instant of expressive action.

Gary chooses to sign his work using "Garley", a contraction of his first and last names.
